LOS ANGELES, Apr. 8 – A plastic mannequin showing knife wounds in the upper naked torso of one of the alleged victims of the “Manson family” had the jury members fidgeting in their seats at the murder trial of Robert Beausoleil.

Deputy District Attorney Burton Katz unveiled Tuesday the lifelike facsimile of 34-year-old Gary Hinman, a musician whom the state charges Beausoleil killed at the orders of hippie cult leader Charles Manson.

The mannequin, complete with a Van Dyke beard, bore two knife wounds in the chest, two scalp cuts and a long, deep slash across the cheek and ear.

Motorcycle gang leader Danny DeCarlo had told the jury that Manson came to Hinman’s home and slashed him across the face with a sword, according to a story told DeCarlo by Beausoleil.

DeCarlo said Beausoleil told him that he later killed Hinman because he would not give the “family” money.

DeCarlo, 25, a small man with a handlebar mustache, said under cross examination that he turned informant against Manson and his cult because the girls in the “family” were trying to pin their crimes on his “Straight Satans.”

“Those lousy, stinking broads up there (at the Spahn Ranch where the Manson family lived) were trying to put it all on my brothers,” DeCarlo said.

The gang leader testified that he lived with the family for a time and that he considered Manson his friend.

Defense lawyer Leon Salter asked DeCarlo if he considered Beausoleil his friend. The gang leader leaned forward in his seat, pointed at Beausoleil and said:

“Bobby, I don’t want to sit here and testify against you. I didn’t want to testify against nobody. I don’t dig it.”
