Manson Follower Won’t Leave Prison

ALDERSON, W.Va., Mar. 30 — Sandra Good, a member of the Charles Manson family who served 10 years for mailing death threats to businessmen, refused to leave prison Friday because she would be prohibited from associating with Manson or his other followers, officials said.

Ms. Good, who has a child by Manson, refused to accept a release certificate containing “a condition that she not associate with any members or former members of the Manson family,” said Gwynne Sizer, warden at the Federal Correctional Institution for Women.

“She has been an excellent prisoner in her 10 years here, but she remains very committed to Charlie Manson,” added Dave Helman, the warden’s executive assistant.

Ms. Good also objected to placement in a halfway house in Camden, N.J., officials said. Helman said she had initially been scheduled to go to Sacramento, Calif., but “there was a lot of adverse reaction” in that state and the federal parole commission changed her destination. The Manson family was based in southern California.

Several times in the past month, Ms. Good has said she does not want to leave the prison, where she has been serving a 15-year sentence. She was convicted of sending death threats through the mail to corporate officials whom she claimed were polluting the planet. Officials said they had no choice but to schedule her release because of the time off for good behavior she had accumulated.

Ms. Good said in a recent interview that “I want to be where my family is, and my family is in prison.” Although she was not involved in the Manson family murders of actress Sharon Tate and eight other people in 1969, she defended Manson’s actions.

Her rejection of the release terms requires the prison to continue holding her, Ms. Sizer said

“She will have a hearing by the federal parole commission in the next 60 days,” the warden said “At that point they will give her another date for release based upon coming up with another plan.”

A 35-year-old former California surfer girl, Ms. Good has worked as a gardener at Alderson, the nation’s only federal prison for women. Officials said her closest friend has been Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, another member of the group that formed in the late 1960s under the leadership of the charismatic Manson.

Ms. Fromme is serving a life sentence for attempting to assassinate then-President Gerald Ford in 1975. Manson and four other members of his group are serving life sentences in California for the 1969 murders.

“We’re like nuns, working toward Earth balance. In a way, this place can be viewed as our convent,” Ms. Good said earlier this month. By staying inside where my family is, I keep myself outside of thoughts dedicated to money, power and approval.”

Ms. Good’s release certificate had stipulated that she remain at the Camden halfway house, operated by Volunteers of America, for 120 days and afterward report regularly to a federal parole officer until 1990.

She has expressed a desire to see Manson again but has not indicated whether she would try to visit him in prison, said Helman. To do so, she would need permission from her parole officer, he said.

“She’s been an excellent prisoner. Of course, there’s been a lot of attention because of the Manson connection,” Helman said.

“We’ve seen a different side. If you listen to her environmental views, they aren’t really that different from what you would hear from a conservation group. But she can’t talk about it without eventually bringing up Manson, and that immediately grabs everyone’s attention.

“She realizes that’s something she may have to live with the rest of her life.”

Earlier this month, Theodore Streleski, convicted of the 1978 bludgeoning of a Stanford University professor, refused for a third time to abide by California parole conditions that would have required him to stay away from the university. Streleski, 48, who was sentenced to eight years for second-degree murder, complained the restriction was unfair.

He remains in prison but will be eligible for release without conditions in September, according to the California corrections department.
