Kanarek Says Bugliosi Leaked News
Wednesday, October 17th, 1973
REDONDO BEACH, Oct. 17 – Defense attorney Irving Kanarek Thursday named Vincent Bugliosi as one of the men responsible for news leaks during the Charles Manson trial.
Speaking to members of the SouthWest Press Association in Redondo Beach, Kanarek called for a grand jury probe to prove which two out of six attorneys implicated in the case supplied the information.
Kanarek, one of the six, charged the leaks and subsequent stories in the press resulted in an unfair trial for Manson, who the attorney insists is innocent of all charges.
The incident occurred in October 1970 when the Los Angeles Herald Examiner published a story claiming Manson had formulated a death list of famous personalities including Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor. Judge Charles Older earlier had ordered a gag on all such infor-mation during the trial.
Newsman Bill Farr refused to divulge the source of the information, but told Older that two out of the six attorneys connected with the case were responsible.
Kanarek said there is no question in his mind that Bugliosi, who was prosecutor in the case, is one of the two.
